Dani Asfour @ AUB

The American University of Beirut is the most prestigious University in the Middle East. Founded in 1866, it has five faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine - including the School of Nursing, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, and Health Sciences. In addition to these faculties, the University has newly built a School of Business. AUB has received many SJS students that proved to be among the best and have majored in various fields of studies.

AUB started its long journey when American missionaries in Lebanon and Syria back in 1862 asked Dr. Daniel Bliss to withdraw from the evangelistic work of the mission in Lebanon to found a college of higher learning that would include medical training. It was felt that this college should have an American educational character, should be administered independently from the Mission, and should be maintained by its own funds. Dr. Bliss traveled to the United States in the summer of 1862 to solicit funds for this new enterprise. By August 1864 he had raised $100,000. After he has collected another 4,000 pounds in England, he travelled to Beirut in March 1866. The college opened with its first class of 16 students on December 3, 1866. A total of 18 Presidents and Acting Presidents succeeded one another during 138 years of prosperous development.

Dani Asfour, who graduated from SJS in 1982, is Director of Business Services at AUB. The division manages other departments such as Purchasing Department, Supply Department, Faculty Housing, Auxiliary Services (Motor Pool, Travel, Parking, ID Center, Food Services, Book Store, Maintenance Contracts & Central Duplicating Center).
